Canada expects dozens of new wildfires and deploys the army

The Canadian government will deploy the military to help put out more than 100 wildfires. The fires are raging in the province of British Columbia, in the southwest of the country.

The army deploys planes and about 350 soldiers to assist the fire brigade. They can also assist with evacuations.

The number of wildfires in Canada is not yet declining. Dozens are expected to be added this weekend, partly due to lightning. About 12,000 lightning strikes were counted yesterday.

Uncontrollable

The most dangerous fire is about 20 kilometers from the city of Kamloops, between Vancouver and Calgary. The fire covers more than 300 square kilometers and is uncontrollable. Campers in the wider area are turned away.
