Sachsenpokal cracker Lok Leipzig against Dynamo: From fear of riot and final dream

By Nico Zeißler

Leipzig – More than 19 years of waiting are over! Today, Wednesday (3.30 p.m. / MDR), the eagerly anticipated and highly explosive derby between the 1. FC Lokomotive Leipzig and Dynamo Dresden in the semifinals of the Saxony Cup. The police are on the alert.

February 16, 2002: In the top game of the 20th match day of the Oberliga NOFV-Süd, Dynamo and the locomotive predecessor VfB Leipzig split with a 1: 1. It was the last meeting of the Saxon clubs so far.

Dynamo rose at the end of the season after the relegation victory over Hertha BSC in the Regionalliga, VfB finished fourth. A year and a half later, 1. FC Lokomotive emerged from the insolvent VfB. All yesterday’s news.

Because Wednesday is about honor, fame and lots of money. The Sachsenpokal champion will receive around 140,000 euros as entry fee for the first round of the DFB-Pokal 2021/22. Who will do this will be decided on “Amateurs Final Day” (May 29th). Chemnitzer FC is already waiting.

But first of all, the locomotive and dynamo have to eliminate their opponents. A rather unequal duel is pending in the Bruno-Plache-Stadion.

Because Dresden continued to reel off its games in the 3rd division during the entire Corona period, making the direct return to the 2nd Bundesliga perfect last Sunday.

At the FCL, however, the jerseys have been hanging unused in the dressing room for almost seven months (!). After this 1-0 against ZFC Meuselwitz on October 28th the regional league season was canceled. They also received a bye for the Saxony Cup quarter-finals. There were only two test matches against Meuselwitz (2: 3) and FC Viktoria Berlin (1: 3).

Dynamo Dresden arrives with many juniors – locomotive advantage?

In purely statistical terms, the trade fair townspeople have been ahead of the game – at least when it comes to co-competitions. In the FDGB Cup, Leipzig celebrated six victories between 1967 and 1987, Dresden only three. In addition, there was Lok’s success in the 2nd DFB Cup round in 1992.

The Probstheidaer can no longer refer to this. After all, they come back from the cold, so to speak, to their home field and have the absolute top favorite to win the cup in front of their chest.

But: The SGD will only arrive with four players from the professional squad – Stefan Kiefer (19), Maximilian Großer (19), Max Kulke (20) and Justin Löwe (22). The rest is filled with U19 and U17 kickers. In addition, Lok’s ex-coach Heiko Scholz (55) is on the sidelines and will look after the second division climber.

The Saxon police, however, are on alert. At the latest after the serious riots around the Dynamo promotion on Sunday, the meeting on Wednesday should be even more in focus than already.

As is well known, parts of both fan camps do not shy away from violence. Although no spectators are allowed in “Bruno”, the fans will probably be in the vicinity of the stadium and watch the game on MDR.

It cannot be ruled out that groups from both clubs may visit the closer surroundings of the stadium, said police spokeswoman Sandra Freitag on TAG24 request.

Accordingly, the emergency services – consisting of the Leipzig Police Department and the riot police – would also suspect violations of the Saxon Infection Protection Act or Assembly Act.

Officials from other federal states are not used.
