NEW YORK – Nassau County Police are working to return instruments, including a $ 1,000 flute, that were stolen from a local high school twice earlier this month.
Two suspects, Gem Hattat of Lindenhurst, 27, and Jarrett Boyarsky, 27, face charges of robbery and attempted robbery in connection with robberies that occurred at Carle Place High School on June 4 and 10.
According to police, the alleged thieves took instruments from the Cherry Lane school and damaged a smart board and laptop in the process.
Boyarsky allegedly went alone to the same high school on June 10 and stole musical instruments. Up to 15 instruments in total would have been taken. Five belonged to students, authorities said.
The two were captured 11 days after the second robbery when they were seen on the roof of Rushmore Elementary School by officers who responded to an alarm triggered. They both jumped out of the building and were arrested at that time.
A handful of instruments have since been recovered, including the electric guitar of a music teacher, police said. The $ 1,000 flute somehow ended up in California, and police are still working to get that instrument back.
It was not immediately clear how the alleged thieves entered the school in the first place. The lawyer’s information for them was not immediately available.
