The Movies raises 50,000 euros for restoration within a day: “We are completely overwhelmed”

The Movies cinema has raised 50,000 euros in twelve hours through a crowdfunding campaign. That was necessary to restore the great hall.

Amsterdam’s oldest cinema had started a crowdfunding campaign last Thursday. Due to the corona crisis, the cinema lost a lot of income, so that the restoration could not be paid entirely out of pocket. That is why the cinema asked the people of Amsterdam for help. The renovation will cost the film house a total of about half a million euros. The owner of the property is responsible for part of it.

“Within one day you have responded en masse to our call. Thank you, thank you, fifty thousand times thanks to all of you”, writes the cinema on its website. “Not only because of the donations, but also because of all the sweet comments we read on the campaign page.”

In the summer of last year, a petition was started to save the cinema. This happened after the owner had said in an interview that in the most ideal situation, the cinema could remain open until December at the latest, because a lot of loss was incurred due to the corona rules. Aldermen Touria Meliani (art and culture) and alderman Victor Everhardt (economic affairs) also watched to the possibilities to help the ‘ailing’ cinema.

The crowdfunding campaign will remain online until July 31.
