Berlin states that the completion of the construction of Nord Stream-2 will not interfere with maintaining gas transit through the territory of Ukraine.
The German authorities are seeking to preserve the transit of Russian gas to Europe through Ukraine for the next decades, said on Friday, July 2, German Finance Minister Olaf Scholz in interview Bloomberg TV.
“Germany is already acting in this direction. We are working hard to extend the agreement on gas transit between Ukraine and Russia. And we feel responsible for the transit of gas through Ukraine in the future, in the coming decades, and not just in the next two or three years. “, – said the head of the Ministry of Finance.
According to Scholz, Germany receives gas from different sources, therefore, he believes, the completion of the construction of the Russian gas pipeline Nord Stream 2 it will not hurt to keep transit through the territory of Ukraine.
He also stressed that the European Union is working to ensure that not a single member country of the community is damaged due to the SP-2, and “an important part of this is to ensure gas transit through Ukraine in the future.”
According to him, the current transit agreement is valid until at least 2024, but the agreement implies that the parties will check the possibility of extending it until 2034.
Earlier, German Foreign Minister Heiko Maas said that Berlin is doing everything possible, so that Ukraine does not suffer from the commissioning of the Russian gas pipeline Nord Stream 2.
