Joseph Mitchell went to the editorial office every day. He wrote because he had to write. Nobody at The New Yorker magazine knew what he was writing about. Mitchell was inventory and legend there. It went on for 31 years and six months. “He didn’t stop writing. He was just working on a piece that didn’t really work,” said his former colleague Roger Angell.
