Argenteuil: launching a competition to encourage young people to be vaccinated, is it a good idea?

Getting vaccinated doesn’t cost anything and it can pay off. In a way, this is the message that the municipality of Argenteuil seeks to convey to young people. She is organizing a competition, called « Destination vaccination », for all residents aged 18 to 25 who will have received a first or second injection between July 1 and July 31.

They will be able to register on the city’s website and participate in a draw to win 95 prizes, including weekends in Europe (worth 500 euros), concert, cinema, theater tickets. or entrances to the swimming pool.

This initiative comes in response to a drop in the rate of vaccinations at the center set up in the Jean-Vilar room. “We are starting to see a slowdown of around 10%”, indicates the mayor’s office. But there is an emergency. “The participation of young people is indeed the key to the success of the vaccination strategy,” emphasizes Georges Mothron (LR). The more young people are vaccinated, the more we will all be protected. I hope that Destination Vaccination, a unique and symbolic initiative, will contribute to it and that many elected officials will join me by setting up such a device. “

60% of 18-25 year olds are vaccinated in the 95

Contaminations are accelerating in neighboring countries and scientists are considering the arrival of a fourth wave in the fall in France. “If you get vaccinated today, vaccination coverage will not be reached until August 25,” said the mayor’s office.

To prevent the pandemic from resuming, action must therefore be taken now and the vaccination of young people is still too low. “In Val-d’Oise, 60% of 18-25 year olds are not vaccinated,” he emphasizes. The competition is seen as a way to lower this figure.

However, this initiative is not received positively by everyone. “Why empower when we can infantilize even young people, reacts Nicolas Casellato, local LREM manager. If the intention is laudable, I am not sure that we should organize this kind of carrot to be vaccinated when it is a strictly responsible and civic act. “And to ironize on the opportunity to win a trip to the Maldives to move the Argenteuillais to the polls….

“It is a reaction that we could expect, answers the town hall. But what other lever could we activate? “
