Viersen / Willich / Mönchengladbach. The Lord Mayor of Mönchengladbach, the District Administrator of the Viersen district and the Mayor of the City of Viersen and the Mayor of the City of Willich signed a joint agreement on Thursday, July 1, to provide mutual support for rail transport projects in the region. This was preceded by corresponding resolutions in the city councils and in the district council.

The implementation of the measures decided will significantly advance regional rail transport. The agreement is therefore a milestone on the way to sustainable and climate-friendly mobility on the left Lower Rhine.

An essential part of the agreement is the westward extension of the S28 from Kaarster See to Viersener Bahnhof. The agreement was therefore signed on the course of the planned route, on Schanzweg.

In addition to the extension of the S28, the agreement includes a number of other local rail passenger transport projects on the left Lower Rhine, which will have a positive impact on the entire region, including:

• Maintaining the RE 13 line (Venlo-Viersen-Mönchengladbach-Düsseldorf-Wuppertal-Hamm) and securing the connection to today’s stops with the usual frequency when realizing a fast passenger rail connection between Eindhoven and Düsseldorf
• The acceleration of the RE8 between Cologne and Mönchengladbach and the establishment of a second S6 per hour on the route through the construction of a second track between Rheydt Hauptbahnhof and Rheydt-Odenkirchen
• The extension of the S8 via Mönchengladbach Hauptbahnhof to Rheydt Hauptbahnhof or optionally to Erkelenz / Hückelhoven, connected with an additional stop in the area of the Niederrhein University of Applied Sciences.

The compatibility between the S28 and the cycle expressway between Krefeld, Willich and Mönchengladbach is also stipulated.

Willich’s Mayor Christian Pakusch is pleased that this forward-looking decision has been made. “Many of those involved in the city of Willich have been working hard for years to bring this immensely important infrastructure project to fruition,” said Pakusch.

“The connection to the Regiobahn is an important building block to improve the general traffic situation”, Willich’s mayor is convinced. “We need a mix of mobility. The lack of rail connections is the last major area in which we have not been well positioned so far. The motorway connection is very good; A good network of cycle paths is also extremely important for individual mobility. It was therefore absolutely necessary for us to be compatible between the S 28 and the cycle expressway between Krefeld, Willich and Mönchengladbach. “

Mayor Sabine Anemüller says: “The signing of the Letter of Intent is an important milestone on the way to revitalizing the existing route and realizing the S28 project. The extension to Viersen is indispensable for the people in the region and makes a significant contribution to climate protection. What is important for the city of Viersen in this context is the rejection of the Viersen curve, which was once again confirmed by the council in a resolution. “

The west extension of the S28 from Kaarster See to the Viersen train station will allow you to get on the S28 in Schiefbahn and Neersen and travel to Kaarst, Neuss, Mettmann, Viersen or Düsseldorf without being stuck in a traffic jam.

District Administrator Dr. Andreas Coenen says: “Today is a historic day for the district. We have worked towards this decision for many years. The extension of the S 28 to Viersen will noticeably improve the mobility of citizens in the entire district. Many will prefer to get on the train instead of being stuck in traffic on the way to and from Düsseldorf. In addition to this project, in coordination with our partners in the cities, we have succeeded in creating an overall package from which the entire region will benefit. In this way we also make a decisive contribution to climate protection. “

“The cooperation on the Lower Rhine works. With infrastructure projects in particular, it is extremely important that we support each other and thus achieve more. For Mönchengladbach it was important to safeguard the interests of residents, nature and species protection, and it succeeded. That is why we do not want to stop at the expansion of rail transport, but also cooperate in other areas on an intermunicipal basis, ”said Mayor Felix Heinrichs. The council of the city of Mönchengladbach voted in its meeting yesterday for the joint declaration.
