GridHEALTH.id – New variant of Covid-19 again reported to have entered Indonesia, to be precise in DKI Jakarta.

Finding varian Kappa B.1617.1 apparently mentioned by the Governor of DKI Jakarta Anies Baswedan in the coordination meeting for the Implementation of Restrictions on Community Activities (PPKM), last Tuesday (29/6/2021).

Dicky Budiman, an epidemiologist at Australia’s Griffith University, said that the Kappa variant can be transmitted directly in a short period of time.

It only takes about 10 seconds for a person to be infected with Covid-19 due to the attack of the new variant.

Is that true?

The transmission of the Kappa variant tends to be the same as the Delta variant from India.

Dicky said that both the Kappa and the Delta variants were more contagious because they had the ability to reproduce 6-8 times.

“The Delta variant can be up to 8, at least 6, meaning that from one person it can infect six or eight people because it is very effective,” said Dicky.

However, according to Dicky, the transmission of the Delta variant and the Kappa variant through passing through each other could occur due to the behavior of people in Australia who are less compliant in wearing masks.

“Because crossing paths means that we often pass each other while talking or while talking on the phone or coughing loudly, that’s enough, when we pass through it can be inhaled if both are not wearing masks plus the Delta variant,” he said.

Meanwhile, the head of the biosecurity research program at the Kirby Institute, Prof. Raina Macintyre, said that there were differences in the symptoms of Covid-19 due to the Kappa variant.

“There is also anecdotal evidence coming from India that the Kappa variant may have a slightly different clinical presentation to the Delta strain and other variants.”

“People with the Kappa variant may experience abdominal pain, diarrhea and gastrointestinal symptoms rather than the more typical respiratory symptoms,” he said.
