Gothenburg – Policeman shot and killed

Swedish police confirm that an official was killed in a shooting incident in the district Biskopsgården north of Gothenburg on Wednesday night.

It is with great sadness that we have been informed that a colleague has died after being shot tonight. Our thoughts go to family, loved ones and co-workers. I have talked to the regional chief and parts of the rest of the police management in region Väst to make sure that they have the resources needed to arrest the culprit, says the Swedish national police chief, Anders Thornberg, according to GT.

Swedish police reported the incident at 22.34 on Wednesday night. The first reports were that a police officer and another person were injured in the shooting episode in Biskopsgården on Hisingen in Gothenburg, writes NTB.

Just over 2 o’clock on Thursday night, it was stated that no one but the police officer had been taken to hospital with serious injuries. At 2.54 informs the police that the police officer died in hospital.

– Tragic

– This is a terrible tragic event and a sad message to receive. My thoughts go above all to his relatives, but also to all his colleagues, says regional chief Klas Johansson in the West police district in Sweden.

The policeman is said to have been shot when he spoke to some people. A large area is cordoned off while forensic investigations and questioning of witnesses take place through the night. Large resources have been invested in the hunt for the perpetrator.

Alicia is next door to the scene and was going to sleep when she heard what sounded like shots.

– We are lying in bed and going to fall asleep when we heard four or five shot-like sounds. Do not think about it anymore, but since then 15-16 police cars come down by Vårväderstorget, she says to GT.

– Terribly scary

She sees the police cars from her window.

– It seems terribly scary. I am the mother of a two-year-old. It’s extremely scary. It seems a bit like being in the wrong place at the wrong time, says Alicia.

The police spokesman, Fredrik Svedemyr, tells the newspaper that many people live in the area.

– We have witness information from the place. Exactly how many, or to what extent, I do not know. If you have information, you can contact the police on the spot, says Svedemyr.
