Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – China and his people were preparing for a ‘luxury feast’. The country celebrates the centenary of the founding of the ruling Communist Party, Thursday (1/7/2021).
Chinese President Xi Jinping is said to be giving an important speech at Beijing’s Tiananmen Square. Xi, is China’s strongest leader since Mao Zedong and is a populist for his image of the fast handling of the coronavirus at home and his bold attitude globally.
Launch Reuters, fighter jets and helicopters will cross the city. Party seniors and retired Chinese leaders will attend.
“Over the past 100 years, the party has written a remarkable chapter in the history of China’s nation-building and human progress,” Xi said last Tuesday, at a ceremony honoring “exemplary party members”.
Xi has been in power since late 2012 as Secretary General of the Communist Party of China. In 2013, he became president.
Xi initially focused on cracking down on corruption, which he said had eroded party morale. Xi also removed a presidential term limit that would allow him to continue in office.
In 2020, the party ranks ‘bloated’ to 2.43 million members. It is the largest in history since Xi became president.
Data released Wednesday showed the Chinese Communist Party now has 95.15 million members. Not farmers and workers alike, the party embraces the market and entrepreneurship.
Under Xi’s leadership, the public has been called increasingly nationalist. Many citizens expressed pride in China’s achievements and praised Xi’s leadership and the party.
However, China still faces a number of challenges including a strong Western reaction. This relates to the treatment in Hong Kong, Xin Jiang, the South China Sea and Taiwan.
Not to mention the outbreak of the corona which was first discovered in Wuhan, China. This increases global pressure for a special and independent investigation into the origins of the coronavirus in the country.
Meanwhile, in Hong Kong, this ‘luxury party’ will be marked by a flag-raising ceremony Thursday. It also marks the 24th anniversary of the city’s return to China from Britain.
Protests are likely to occur from pro-democracy activist groups. However, the police are said to have rejected demonstrations to suppress the spread of the corona virus.
Local media said 10,000 police would be on guard. Previously the Hong Kong government also canceled fireworks displays, to prevent gatherings.
