Fighting has escalated since the US took off last month, with the Taliban seizing large swathes of Afghanistan. All remaining US troops are expected to withdraw by the September 11 deadline.

It said rebels had taken more than 50 of the 370 districts since last May, besieging many towns and approaching the capital Kabul.
