CEO Steven van der Heijden thinks that a beach holiday on the Turkish south and west coast can be justified again. “Turkish coasts would have been yellow for a long time if they had been looked at by European standards.”
The Corondon boss emphasizes that his company has extensively assessed the situation in Turkey. He notes that there is a lot of testing for corona and that the infection figures look good. “I wouldn’t venture to Egypt, which is normally also an important destination for us. There is far too little testing there,” he says in response to reports on various travel sites.
The Dutch government still advises against non-essential travel to Turkey. But according to Van der Heijden, this does not stand in the way of Corendon’s step. He indicates that it is up to people whether they want to go or not. Since the start of the virus outbreak, airlines have also been allowed to offer unhindered single flights to orange countries or areas. And that also applies to hotel bookings on hotel sites.
“Never Stopped”
If you receive an orange travel advice, you must be tested before departure back to the Netherlands and you will be urgently advised to go home for ten days on return. In Turkey, the test is taken by appointment in the hotel where you are staying. In the eyes of Corendon, nothing will change for the travel and cancellation insurance, unless there are additional costs that are the result of corona-related situations.
“Actually, we have never stopped offering holidays to Turkey, the only thing that has changed is that we now actually carry them out,” explains Van der Heijden. Despite the crisis, many Dutch people already booked a summer holiday to Turkey last year, he says. Corendon has recently been asked by those customers whether their trip would still go ahead, given the orange travel advice. The travel organization would like to provide these people with clarity with the high season approaching. They can continue their vacation, if they want to. Last minute trips to the Turkish sun can also be booked again.
Van der Heijden indicates that Corendon will continue to follow the travel advice of the Dutch government in Europe. A popular holiday destination like Greece is now on yellow. But if that country suddenly jumped orange again, Corendon would stop carrying out its holidays to Greek destinations.
