More and more young people are getting their vaccine against the coronavirus. They appear to faint more often than their parents or grandparents after the injection. That writes The Importance of Limburg.
–Why is this important?
The vaccination campaign in Belgium is running smoothly. 42 percent of the adult population has been fully vaccinated against the coronavirus. Recently, young people under the age of 18 have also been vaccinated. They experience an above average amount of fainting after vaccination.“It is a combination of factors,” says Lommel doctor Jos Vanhoof The importance. “First of all, young people have lower blood pressure than older people. Combine that with stress before the jab and you immediately have a greater chance of fainting.”
Blood pressure drop
In addition, according to Vanhoof, young people may also be less prepared for their injection. “For example, they haven’t had breakfast in the morning, drank too little or had too little sleep, which makes them more likely to pass out. Especially for young people who are vaccinated in the morning, the latter factors can weigh extra.”
Fainting has nothing to do with the vaccine administered, the doctor says. “It’s a defense mechanism of your body when your brain gets a shortage of blood and oxygen, for example as a result of stress, fatigue or too little food.”
“Because you often end up in a lying position when you pass out, blood can flow to your brain and other precious organs, causing you to regain consciousness. That is why it is also good to put the person on the floor in the event of a blood pressure drop and to keep the arms and legs up.”
“Fear of the prick”
In the vaccination centers in Tongeren and Bilzen, people in their twenties are currently being vaccinated, as well as 16 and 17-year-olds. Responsible Luc Hendrix sees a lot of young people going crazy. “That includes both boys and girls, although we see this phenomenon a little more often among girls,” Hendrix says The Importance of Limburg.
They are trying to prevent the problem of fainting young people. “Now that it is the young people’s turn, we are going to vaccinate a little more while lying down,” says Hendrix.
“We have provided beds in our center from the start of the vaccination campaign, although we have hardly used them until now. But for the young people, those beds now come in handy. Young people who are afraid of their injection should also indicate this in advance, then we will take them to a bed to vaccinate them lying there.”
