The Zátopek International Film Festival in Karlovy Vary will start

“It is my nice duty to announce that the opening film of the festival will be Zátopek, the story of the most famous athlete of all time. The premiere will be on August 20, “said the festival’s president Jiří Bartoška, adding that this is actually the story of David Ondříček, who worked for many years to make the film. “He’s such a perseverer, too,” he concluded.

Interest of Czech filmmakers

“We came across an unusually large number of Czech films to judge, which we are happy about. There were also documents among them. In the end, several of them got to the main competition, specifically three … And for the first time ever, a film from Iraq, specifically from Kurdistan, will be presented, “said the artistic director of the KV IFF, Karel Och.

There will also be three Czech films in the East of the West section. Among others, a feature film by director Jan Foukal Martian Ships or a documentary by Adéla Komrzý Unit of Intense Life.

“We hope that for many films, the Karlovy Vary festival will be a significant springboard for a world career, which is happening,” continued Karel Och.

In addition, eight films will be presented at a special screening at the KV IFF, including the already mentioned Zátopek.

Tribute to The Film Foundation

The festival will run until August 28. The KV IFF will also host a unique tribute to The Film Foundation, founded in 1990 by American filmmaker Martin Scorsese.

The non-profit organization, which was founded thirty-one years ago, is one of the key players in the protection and preservation of film heritage. Thanks to it, more than 900 classic titles from all over the world have been restored.

VIP guests? I’ll see you

Karel Och also commented on the number of films that will be presented in Vary this year: “We are minus thirty films, there will be one hundred and twenty. There are usually up to one hundred and fifty of them. We are able to repeat them five or six times so that all viewers can see them. ”

Who will win this year? The organizers have published films that will compete for the awards of the 55th Karlovy Vary IFF.

He added that they are constantly monitoring the situation so that they can accept all filmmakers at the event. Among other things, it is being decided whether covid-19 vaccines other than those approved by the EU will be recognized. Many potential guests live outside the Union.

Jiří Bartoška humorously added that they are still negotiating something with someone: “We are such a last minute travel agency. We don’t know who’s coming. We don’t know who won’t be afraid. It depends on the situation. “

Preparing for restrictions

Last year, the organizers hoped to provide fans with at least an extraordinary autumn version, the so-called year 54 ½, however, this event eventually had to be canceled on the basis of government regulations. This year was postponed by more than a month due to the uncertain pandemic situation.

“We decided to take this step after careful consideration of the current situation and also after consultation with experts. We hope that in the coming months there will be a significant expansion of vaccination and thus manage the pandemic situation, so that it is possible to organize the Karlovy Vary festival in the most safe form for its guests and visitors. We are, of course, ready to comply with all valid measures, “Bartoška said of the change of date, believing that the next year should take place by the standard date at the beginning of July.
