Team Fortress 2 Hits Record Concurrent Player Count 14 Years After Release – Gaming – .Geeks

The increase in player numbers coincides with an update to Team Fortress that came out last week. In it, several cosmetic items were added, which are designed by the community toegevoegd

This is very short sighted. Remarkably short, since I submitted a news submit about this last week that went into more detail

The cosmetic items are virtually irrelevant. Almost every six months, Valve puts a number of cosmetic items in an update. Those items are almost always completely by the community made; Valve itself does nothing about it. The previous update with new items and maps came out around Christmas, when Valve also temporarily added some maps that the die community created. Ironically it was one of these folders an absolute monstrosity; it was so bad that many TF2 players were there started from that Valve had absolutely no idea what they were doing anymore.

What made last week’s update so special is all the other changes. The “bots”, as they are called by many, have made Team Fortress 2 almost unplayable for a year now. Almost every official server has suffered from these bots: they are fully automated, play sniper and hit every headshot so they can kill normal players very quickly. And Valve seemed to do nothing. As if they wanted to bleed the game to death.

Then came in May of this year suddenly an interview with Gabe Newell (top man of Valve) in which someone asked Gabe Newell if they were doing something about this huge bot problem. Newell then confirmed that they were actually working on an update. However, since we haven’t had a “real” update in years, this was met with a lot of skepticism. It was assumed that Newell said this mainly to avoid losing face; after all, it would be quite embarrassing for the top executive of Valve if he didn’t even know that one of their most played games has a huge problem? And then we heard nothing for months.

Until now, suddenly, out of nowhere, this update comes true. And unlike all the other updates from the past year, this one adds more than community items. And unlike Valve’s latest effort to address the bot problem (they then made it impossible for Free-to-Play accounts to use the in-game chat – nothing helps against bots, is hugely frustrating for new players) , they have suddenly added very useful features that go into exactly the techniques the bots use. This update shows that at least someone at Valve knows very well what is wrong with the game, and has good ideas for how to fix it. And for a long story even longer to make, that is in my opinion huge.

TL;DR: Valve proved that they are still working on Team Fortress 2 with last week’s update, and has addressed one of the game’s biggest issues. A lot of people see this as a very good sign.

As an aside, Team Fortress 2 plays with 12 vs 12 by default, not 6v6 as the article suggests. There is a competitive mode in which you play 6v6, but many maps are made for larger teams.
