Faced with the shortage of candidates for certain positions within its theme park in Orlando (United States), Disney has decided to implement hiring bonuses. The $ 1,000 (€ 837) bonus is for newcomers to housekeeping and kitchen crews, reports Business Insider. In several professional fields of the tourism sector, job vacancies are difficult to fill.
The workforce has become scarce with the health and economic crisis linked to the coronavirus. During the health crisis, the Disney group laid off 32,000 employees, including 28,000 in September 2020 alone. The company is now struggling to find takers for the tasks that are again necessary. She hopes the bonus will attract applicants. To receive it, they will have to work full-time and remain in post for at least 90 days.
A “national economic emergency”
For housekeeping staff, for example, a first payment of $ 250 (approximately € 210) will be made at the end of this period. The rest of the payment will be made after 150 days if the employee has not left the company. The company’s objective is to attract candidates but also to secure their services for a certain period of time. Only new employees hired between June 15 and October 2, 2021 are eligible, according to the Disney website.
The lack of available workers is a concern in the United States. The country’s Chamber of Commerce called the phenomenon“National economic emergency”. Suzanne Clark, CEO of the organization, said he “Posed an imminent threat to our fragile recovery and to America’s great renaissance”.
