The delta variant of the coronavirus gives a slightly more serious course of the disease, and that a few more are admitted to hospital if they become infected with this corona variant. This is what assistant health director Espen Nakstad tells Dagbladet.
The delta variant is also more contagious, and the vaccines seem to be a little less effective against it, but Nakstad still believes that the vaccines provide good protection.
– When it comes to the effect of vaccines, it seems that if you have received two doses of the vaccines we use here in Norway, then you are very well protected both against infection and against serious disease, says Nakstad.
How Delta ravages Europe
– It also seems that you become very infectious after two doses, but you are not as well protected against getting mild symptoms, he says.
He also says that the vaccines are probably only around 30 percent effective in preventing delta infection after just one dose, but that it still prevents serious illness.
– Two thirds can thus get mild illness after being infected, if they become infected after receiving a dose, Nakstad says.
He further emphasizes that many in Norway are now vaccinated, and that it helps a lot in the spread of infection. Among other things, he points out that the Oslo area now has far lower infection rates than they had not long ago, and that this is largely due to the virus.
On Monday, Oslo had registered 13 cases of infection in the last 24 hours. On a national basis, 76 cases of infection were registered on Monday. according to FHIs siste ukesrapport was three percent of the detected cases of infection in the country delta infection in week 24.
