The approximately 500 participants moved on Saturday afternoon from the U1 station Troststraße via Reumannplatz to Columbusplatz.
The demonstrators shouted “Terrorist Erdogan” and, on flags, demanded the release of the Kurdish leader Abdullah Öcalan, who had been sentenced to life imprisonment for terrorism. Several times there were provocations by demonstrators and passers-by. Fireworks and firecrackers were ignited.
The forbidden “wolf salute” was seen several times among passers-by, but an escalation was averted by a large police force. The rally was peacefully dissolved at 6 p.m. on Keplerplatz. At least one arrest has been confirmed by the organizers to date.
The protest took place on the anniversary of the riots by Turkish nationalists at a pro-Kurdish demonstration in the Vienna district. Several dozen men attacked a feminist rally at the time, and there were riots and attacks on the left-wing Ernst Kirchweger House, in which Kurdish and Turkish workers’ associations are also active.
