Palou winner at Road America, Grosjean fifth

The IndyCar met this weekend at Road America, the discipline’s emblematic North American circuit. On Saturday night, Josef Newgarden took pole position ahead of Colton Herta and Jack Harvey. Simon Pagenaud, sixth, was the best French representative on the grid, just ahead of Romain Grosjean.

Disputed this Sunday, the 55-lap race was neutralized several times during its first two thirds, especially after the retirement of Kevin Magnussen. The Dane, called to replace Felix Rosenqvist at McLaren after the Swede’s big crash during the last meeting, did more than appear well for his big IndyCar debut. Unfortunately, he couldn’t see the end of it due to a technical problem.

Strategically, Max Chilton, Takuma Sato and Oliver Askew were among the men who pushed back their last pit stop as far as possible. But it was not between them that the victory was played, but between Josef Newgarden and Álex Palou. The duel between the two men took a different turn, however, when a fourth neutralization occurred within five laps of the checkered flag.

The green flag was waved for a final revival with three laps to go, Josef Newgarden being once again responsible for managing the resumption of hostilities. Playing with incredible bad luck which seems decidedly to pursue him, the Penske driver did not however have this honor since a gearbox problem thwarted his plans. Álex Palou was not asking too much to race to victory and win ahead of Colton Herta, Will Power and Scott Dixon. At the same time, the Spanish driver takes the lead in the championship.

Fifth, Romain Grosjean was one of the leaders of the end of the race, breaking through several well-felt overtaking. It will have made us forget a disappointing race for the two other French drivers, Sébastien Bourdais finishing 16th and Simon Pagenaud 18th.
