The European Parliament and Council have reached a provisional agreement to exclude e-bikes from insurance obligations. Good news for users.
Compulsory for all motorized two-wheelers, insurance for electric bikes will remain optional. Presented in 2018, the proposal for a directive on automobile insurance (MID) caused a stir in the cycle industry since it likened electrically-assisted bicycles to motor vehicles subject to insurance. In the end, the European Parliament and Council reached a new provisional agreement in which electric bicycles are excluded from insurance obligations.
« With this political agreement, we managed to put a stop to excessive and absurd regulation for e-bikes and some other categories like motorsports. »Reacted the rapporteur of the European Parliament, Dita Charanzova.
The agreement now needs to be formally approved by Parliament and Council. Once validated, the directive will enter into force 20 days after its publication in the Official Journal of the EU. The new rules will begin to apply 24 months after the entry into force of the text.
Liability insurance remains recommended
If it is not compulsory from the moment the electric bike does not exceed 250 watts of power and 25 km / h in assistance, civil liability insurance remains strongly recommended.
Without it, you will have to repair (and pay) the damage caused to third parties. It is therefore best to subscribe to the guarantee which is often included in multi-risk home contracts. Otherwise, you can subscribe to a specific civil liability contract with an insurer.
