EU states decide to crack down on Russia
At their summit, the EU states agreed on tougher action against Russia. They want to work out a plan for punitive measures in the event that Russia breaks the law. The Summit Declaration states that it is necessary for the EU and its Member States to react decisively and in a coordinated manner to any further malicious and illegal activity by Moscow. Chancellor Merkel and French President Macron had campaigned for more severe punitive measures as well as resuming peak meetings with Russian President Putin. However, the proposal was rejected. At the end of the first day of the summit, Merkel said that she personally would have liked a more courageous step. Bundestag passes Insect Protection Act
