Mount Merapi which is located on the border of DIY and Central Java, erupted three times, Friday (25/6) morning. The glide distance of hot avalanches was observed to reach 3 kilometers.

Head of the Yogyakarta Geological Disaster Technology Research and Development Center (BPPTKG) Hanik Humaida said that today’s eruption has been monitored since 04.43 WIB.

“Three times hot cloud avalanches at Merapi on June 25, 2021 at 04.43 WIB were recorded on the seismogram with an amplitude of 75 mm and a duration of 61, 132 and 245 seconds,” said Hanik in his statement, Friday.

According to Hanik, the eruption this time is towards the southeast with a sliding distance of hot avalanche clouds that reaches 3 kilometers from the summit.

“The maximum glide distance is three kilometers to the southeast. A column of smoke as high as ± 1000 meters is observed above the peak,” continued Hanik.

BPPTKG, during the observation period of Merapi’s activity today at 00.00-06.00 WIB also found 11 times of incandescent lava activity.

“Five incandescent lava avalanches were observed to the southwest and 6 times to the southeast. With a maximum sliding distance of 1,000 meters,” he explained.

During the same observation period, there were 81 avalanches recorded; 10 times earthquake gusts; 9 times multi-phase earthquake; and 2 shallow volcanic earthquakes.

With this situation, BPPTKG still maintains the Alert status (level III) on Mount Merapi.

BPPTKG warned that the current potential danger is in the form of lava avalanches and hot clouds in the south-southwest sector. Covering the Yellow, Boyong, Bedog, Krasak, Bebeng, and White rivers for a maximum of 5 kilometers and in the southeastern sector the Gendol river as far as 3 kilometers.

Meanwhile, the ejection of volcanic material in the event of an explosive eruption can reach a radius of 3 kilometers from the peak of Mount Merapi.

Light Ash Rain

Meanwhile, several areas in Sleman Regency were reported to have experienced ash rain as a result of this morning’s eruption.

“There was light ash rain,” said the Head of the Emergency and Logistics Division of the Sleman Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD), Makwan.

Ash rain, according to the report he received, flushed two sub-districts namely Cangkringan and Pakem.

In Cangkringan, said Makwan, light ash rain was observed in Padukuhan Turgo. Meanwhile in Pakem, ash rain fell in the areas of Kalitengah Lor Padukuhan, Kaliadem, Ngrangkah, and Plosokerep.

Makwan reported, at least the ash rain was still happening until 06.42 WIB earlier.
