Community approach
A week ago, Dr. Webb and Michael S. Regan, Administrator of the United States Environmental Protection Agency, were the White House officials who came to the Triangle to reinvigorate vaccination efforts against Covid-19.
“We are super excited for the President’s visit, but the important thing is to go out and encourage the Latino and Afro-American communities to get vaccinated,” he told Latin Link NC Idalia Areano de Southeastern Healthcare of North Carolina.
For Blanca Borceguí, from the same group as Idalia, the pandemic highlighted the problems that already existed in the Afro-American and Latino communities.
“They are finally giving us the attention that was needed. Unfortunately, resources are scarce and we must let people know where to go to access them ”.
“We must go out and knock on doors. It’s breaking down barriers and showing that you don’t have to come to us but that we are going to come to you, ”Celina Uribe, also a member of Southeastern Healthcare of North Carolina, told this media.
“There are many people who are afraid, others do not understand and believe that they need many things to get vaccinated. We are here to show them that no ”, he concluded.
The importance of equity
Eliazar Posada, director and interim president of El Centro Hispano, highlighted Latin Link NC the work of approaching the present administration to the Latino community after four traumatic years.
“It is a step forward. This administration is putting resources, ears and attention to equity. “
Posada, indicated that President Joe Biden knows the situation and the impact that the pandemic has had on the Latino community.
“In a brief conversation, Biden spoke about the Covid-19 cases and the needs of the Latino community.”
The director and interim president of El Centro Hispano, mentioned that Biden stressed the support for the Latino community and encouraged young people to get vaccinated.
“The administration is putting resources in organizations like ours so that those resources reach our community,” he concluded.
“A long way to go”
Josh Stein, Attorney General of North Carolina, told Latin Link NC that he is happy for all the people who have already been vaccinated in the state, but it is clear that we still have a long way to go.
“Vaccines are free, easily accessible, and can save your life and that of your loved ones. So we hope that everyone who has not yet been vaccinated will go and get an injection. “
Stein mentioned that Biden’s visit underscores the importance of the entire vaccination initiative.
“The vast majority of people over 30 have already been vaccinated”
“It is very important that younger people know that by getting vaccinated they not only help themselves, but also help their aunts, uncles, parents, grandparents. So we encourage everyone to take that photo, “he added.
