In 2020, the cause of ‘Acute snot’ was found at 30 companies

In 2020, the Animal Health Service has detected the bacterium Avibacterium paragallinarum on 30 poultry farms. That is the cause of the condition ‘Acute snot’. Only some of the farms showed clear symptoms of ‘Acute snot’.

A respiratory infection caused by ‘Acute snot’ only occurs if there is a virulent strain of bacteria. Combination with other bacterial or viral infections often leads to more severe clinical signs. A double infection is characterized by snot, shortness of breath, bulging, thick heads and an increase in sick or dead animals.

The mortality can be from a few animals to tens of percent. In addition, an infection can lead to a decrease in egg production, up to 70%. In parent animals, the infection leads to poorer breeding results. After the sick animals have recovered, the flocks remain carriers of the bacteria and pose a risk of spreading the bacteria.
