On Thursday, June 24, representatives of Slovak hockey clubs met again with the leadership of the Slovak Ice Hockey Association (SZĽH) at a traditional congress. Once again, on the day of his proceedings, there was a controversy.
The last time the congress was held was at the end of November last year, when several media outlets received anonymous accused of leading the union for mismanagement. This morning, before the congress itself, the Criminal Office of the Financial Administration came to the headquarters of the association.
“It is very interesting. Every congress we have something interesting that will happen at the union. It’s already becoming a tradition, ” replied the president of the union Miroslav Satan to the question of what he thinks that the inspection came just that day.
The criminal financial administration office was supposed to intervene at the headquarters of the hockey association for alleged fictitious invoices. “We confirm the control by the Criminal Office of the Financial Administration, which concerns the control of activities since 2017. The management of the association is fully cooperative in this regard and considers that all suspicions are investigated. We consider this to be part of a process launched by the current leadership of the SZĽH, which aims to cleanse the hockey movement of suspicion, wrongdoing and false accusations, ” in its opinion.
They did not provide us with further information from the tax office. “Due to ongoing actions, we are not yet able to provide more detailed information on the intervention. Whenever possible, we will inform the media and the public in a timely manner. “

Last year, we had some three government agencies that checked things. Now it’s the fourth. It is part of some cleansing process that we have put in place.
After my arrival, I initiated that complete audits be performed on all subsidiaries and the civic association SZĽH. Some information came out of them and there were some submissions. This is the result of that cleansing process. We believe that it will be completed, we will be fully cooperative. After a slight delay, the congress itself began, at which a new member of the executive committee was elected. Its member and former president of SZĽH Martin Kohút decided to resign. “Due to my busy schedule, I have announced the termination of my term of office on the Executive Committee to date,” he said Martin Kohút and bequeathed to the club: “It has been an honor to work with you and to work for you.”
Kohút was the president of the union from 2016 to 2019. However, he decided to resign earlier and should not be related to the intervention of the financial administration. “It simply came to our notice then. A new controller and chairman of the Supervisory Board were also elected, and Jaroslav Šmatrála successfully defended both positions.

APPROVED LONG – TERM STRATEGY
At the congress, Miroslav Šatan presented a report by the president of the association, in which he called on clubs to join the long-term strategy of Slovak hockey. “We always had an annual plan in the hockey movement to survive. Slovak hockey now has a long-term vision of ten years. However, no one from the chair of the president of SZĽH or a member of the executive committee can apply the long-term plan in practice. It’s on the shoulders of our managers and coaches in the clubs and we can only achieve it all together. “
“Our vision is to return Slovakia to the world’s top hockey teams and to create an attractive environment in hockey that will offer quality conditions for the education of children and youth,” said the adviser to the president of SZĽH for strategic development Richard Pavlikovský on a long-term development strategy approved by delegates by an overwhelming majority of 305 votes out of a total of 314 possible.
Satan also revealed an increase in the net funding of clubs by the union. In 2019, the club went to about 2.9 million euros, this year it will be 3.9 million. The president of SZĽH also presented the latest projects and the current state of preparation of the network of secondary school regional hockey academies.

SZĽH wants to increase the number of registered players and sports experts in the SZĽH system together with clubs in the coming years, increase the quality of players and hockey experts, increase the number and quality of ice rinks and other infrastructure, also increase the competitiveness of clubs, raise women’s hockey, increase the quality of education of young hockey players and hockey players, to increase parental satisfaction in the field of education and upbringing of children and to improve the perception of the position of Slovak hockey in society.
Confirmation of the SZĽH strategy that education and training are a key priority for the hockey movement are also the projects presented by the association’s leadership at the SZĽH Congress meeting. In cooperation with the non-profit organization LEAF Academy, SZĽH will provide a system of educational workshops for the personal growth of players, which will be conducted in Slovak and English.
For players playing in the SR18 project in Piešťany, the association provided education at the Pierre de Coubertin Bilingual Grammar School in Piešťany so that they do not miss subjects due to matches and the training process. An important project is the “All Ivy League Showcase”, thanks to which 18 selected players under the age of 18 will participate in the training and selection process led by coaches of NCAA University League clubs.
