“Russia’s inviolability of borders is an absolute necessity. It will be protected by all means, diplomatic, political and military if necessary,” Russia’s Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov was quoted as saying. AP, Thursday (24/6/2021).
Ryabkov sarcastically suggested that the British Navy should rename its destroyer from Defender to Aggressor.
“Those who try to test our strength are taking a high risk,” he warned.
Asked what Russia would do to prevent such intrusions in the future, Ryabkov told reporters that it would be ready to fire at targets if the warnings were not successful.
“We can appeal the grounds and demands to respect international law,” Ryabkov said, according to the Interfax news agency.
“If that doesn’t help, we might drop the bomb and not just be on track but on target if its partner doesn’t get it otherwise,” he stressed.
Meanwhile Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov deplored what he described as a deliberate and well-prepared provocation by Britain and backed the strong warning.
“If unacceptable provocative actions are repeated, if they go too far, there is no option to legally protect the borders of the Russian Federation,” Peskov said in a phone call with reporters.
