The Berlin Charité is lifting its corona restrictions and wants to catch up on postponed operations with immediate effect. However, there is a shortage of blood reserves for the clinic to run up. The Charité therefore urgently asks you to donate blood.

“The number of infections is declining and yet the pandemic for the Charité is not over yet,” said Martin Kreis, Board Member for Health Care at the Charité, on June 24, 2021. “We still care for almost 50 seriously ill people in our intensive care units, 20 of them to the artificial lung. Covid-19 will remain a topic at the Charité for a very long time. ”

Charité workforce largely vaccinated twice
Nevertheless, it is now possible to resume regular clinic operations that were previously restricted during the pandemic. The fact that plannable treatments are now possible is due, among other things, to progress in vaccination. The Charité workforce has largely been vaccinated twice, said Kreis. There are also sophisticated hygiene concepts. Therefore, the Charité can now offer almost all treatments as before the pandemic. “This is important because many patients sometimes had to wait a long time for their treatments,” added Kreis. There are also many emergencies beyond the pandemic.

Critical supply situation with blood donations
“We are currently concerned that with the start of the summer vacation, the supply of vital blood donations is already clearly critical,” said Kreis. “That affects us, but so does other houses.” Blood reserves are always necessary for interventions and emergencies that can be planned. “I can only urge everyone to urgently donate blood and in this way to make a solidary contribution to the care of patients.”

The DRK’s blood donation barometer shows bottlenecks
The Charité has two blood donation institutes, one on the Charité Mitte campus and one on the Virchow-Klinikum campus in Wedding. There are also numerous other ways to donate, for example through the German Red Cross. Its blood donation barometer for Germany’s northeast is already showing bottlenecks – especially for rare blood groups such as 0- and A-. But even with A +, B + and B- the supply situation is not good. In addition, donated blood has a limited shelf life. The heat of the past week and the beginning of the summer vacation would have already led to a decrease in donations.
