McAfee was imprisoned in Barcelona, charged with tax evasion. The British-American businessman risked up to 30 years in American prison, awaiting extradition to the United States.
According to El País, he was arrested on October 3, 2020 at El Prat Airport, on his way to Turkey.
It was the United States that had issued the arrest warrant, following allegations of tax evasion worth millions of dollars. The money allegedly came from profits from, among other things, crypto trading.
Despite earning millions on cryptocurrency, McAfee is said to have failed to file tax returns between 2014 and 2018.
McAfee has also previously been in the police spotlight. In 2012, he fled to Guatemala, when he was wanted for the murder of his neighbor in Belize, Gregory Faull. There, the multi-billionaire applied for political asylum, but was rejected.
