Since the start of its mandate, the municipality of Strasbourg has been working on the greening of schoolyards and nurseries. A policy seen as a way to fight against urban heat islands, as explained by the mayor, Jeanne Barseghian (EELV), during a progress report, Tuesday, June 22, 2021.
A new round of work is due to take place this year.
Six schools already vegetated
In 2020, six schools in three school groups – Fischart, Rhin and Branly – have already been the subject of greening work.
These consist of removing some of the bitumen, planting trees, but also installing so-called educational vegetable plots.
For all three vegetated school groups, the municipality claims to have removed 3,500 square meters of asphalt from 22,000 square meters of mineral surface, planted 75 trees and installed 26 vegetable plots. Amount of the work: 400,000 euros including tax.
Seven schools and nurseries affected by work in 2021
In 2021, seven schools and nurseries will see their courses green.
“In these courses, we will change the demineralization rate from 15% in 2020 to nearly 60% in 2021 and the revegetation work will be spread from summer 2021 to summer 2022”, detailed Ms. Barseghian .
Here is the list of establishments concerned:
- Catherine Elementary School – Hautepierre
- Schoepfin elementary school
- Musau school group – Neudorf
- Legrand school group – Neudorf
- Nursery school Academy – Krutenau
- Childcare facility Fritz
- Koenigshoffen Nursery Home
For the Legrand – Neudorf school group, for example, the town hall plans to revegetate nearly 2,500 square meters, plant 13 trees or even install huts, a wooden terrace or a climbing structure, also made of wood.
For the Schoepfin elementary school, 140 square meters will be vegetated and two trees planted, in particular.
