One million doses were reserved over the weekend when officials launched a “summer race” to vaccinate everyone 18 and older by July 19.
Thousands of people lined up in the rain to be beaten at Tottenham Hotspur in north London yesterday after the football club turned into a mobile vaccination clinic for the day. Most of those vaccinated were in their late teens or early twenties.
Officials are racing to vaccinate young adults in a bid to stop the spread of the Indian type and prevent students from bringing Covid-19 home during summer break, which could infect older generations.
Currently, cases are highest among people in their 20s and the incidence of infection is five times higher in people under 25 than in people over 65, with almost all older adults receiving both doses.

Everyone over the age of 18 is urged to host a jab if they haven’t already received it, as the health service enters the latest push to protect the country from the virus.
Public Health England said there was a 79 percent increase in one week in cases of the delta variant, which was first identified in India, with an increase driven by younger age groups.
Emerging centers similar to those in Tottenham Hotspur were installed on Saturday’s sports fields in London, and huge clinics opened at the Olympic Stadium, Stamford Bridge, Charlton Athletic, Selhurst Park and Crystal Palace Athletics Center.
There have also been pop-up clinics at universities, such as York and Canterbury.
The day before, the vaccination program was opened to everyone over the age of 18 and the NHS revealed that 1,008,472 appointments had been booked for the Friday and Saturday vaccinations.
Social media companies have joined a government plan to encourage young people to receive Covid jab. Snapchat, Reddit, TikTok, and YouTube have joined the scheme.
The success of the vaccination launch is critical if “Freedom Day” finally continues on July 19.

Approximately two-thirds of the cases correspond to unvaccinated people, and only one in 13 cases corresponds to those who received the two doses.
So far, almost 59.5 per cent of British adults have received two doses of the vaccine, while 81.6 per cent have received at least one dose.
Dr Susan Hopkins of Public Health England said yesterday that she expected all people over the age of 40, seven out of 10 adults, to be fully vaccinated when the restrictions were lifted.
So far, four out of five adults have received one dose and three out of five two vaccines.
Sir Simon Stevens, Executive Director of the NHS, said: “It is wonderful to see so many young people step up to do their part in the battle against the virus, protecting themselves, their friends and family. NHS staff are doing their best to get hit on the arms.
Professor Kevin Fenton, Regional Director of Public Health for London in England, said yesterday: “We are on the cusp of a race last summer, working with local authorities to increase rates among all over 18s, but especially among those over 40 years old. This is our first focus now.

Professor Fenton said that it was unlikely that all people over the age of 30 in the capital would be vaccinated by July 19, but that it was essential that they receive a single dose by then.
He said PHE staff in London “really deal with questions that people might have about vaccination, safety or where to do it.”
The surge in bookings came on a weekend that has already had nearly 1.8 million appointments in just three days, after the NHS vaccination program was opened to people in their twenties.
About 692,299 appointments were scheduled Tuesday when children ages 23 to 24 became eligible for an injection, with another 635,478 appointments on Wednesday when the program was extended to those ages 21 to 22.
An additional 456,366 appointments were booked on Thursday, meaning more than 2.5 million appointments have been booked in just four days since under-25 bookings opened on Tuesday.
NHS Executive Director Sir Simon Stevens said: “This pandemic has been a challenge for everyone, but the various restrictions have particularly affected young people.
That’s why it’s good news that Covid vaccines are now available to all adults across the country, and more than three million people in their 20s have already received their first dose.
If you are 18 or older and have not yet earned your right, now is the time. It’s the easiest way to protect yourself, keep your friends and family safe, and hopefully give us back all of our summer freedoms.
Huge lines formed on the outskirts of Tottenham Hotspur in North London for vaccines today when the vaccination program opened for people aged 18-20.

Encourage your friends and loved ones to do the same, because now we are in the race to the finish line.
“The more people are vaccinated, the safer we will all be and the sooner freedom can return.”
Health Secretary Matt Hancock said: “It is amazing to see the enthusiasm that young people are showing for vaccination across the country, and it is testament to the wonderful work of the team to keep as many people safe from Covid-19 as possible. .
“If you have not booked your appointment yet, I urge you not to hesitate to give yourself an injection and get this protection for yourself and your loved ones.”
