The refurbished technology It is a market that is in constant growth in our country, but in particular in the last year, sales have skyrocketed in cell phones of this type.
The mobile phones that are reconditioned are those also known as “open box”, which basically means that they are not sealed, but have been opened and / or used.
The vast majority of these devices are obtained when customers return them to stores for whatever reason, from a scratch on the case to requiring a screen change.
Instead of throwing them away, and considering that they are mostly almost new, they are resold for technology companies to repair and then return them to the market, but at a much lower price than the original.
Julio Tapia it is Operations and Logistics manager from the Chilean online store Buyweb, where they market several products, refurbished phones being one of their main items, and indicates that they have registered a huge increase in the sale of this type of item since 2020.
“We have had an explosive demand in refurbished cell phones in the last year. Since January, we have registered a 500% growth in this category, with a monthly increase of around 50%. This is great growth, it is a very thriving sector ”, he says.
The reasons behind this success? The manager of Buyweb states that this occurs because “People are becoming more aware of the economics of a refurbished phone. With these, a lot of money is saved and, in addition, the environment is taken care of ”.
And it is that the technology industry is highly polluting. As we have already reported before, a large part of the toxic waste that exists on the planet comes from these devices.
On the other hand, Julio Tapia explains that “now people are trusting that these devices have an excellent guarantee, so they are a good alternative.”
On Buyweb work with about 10 national stores that sell reconditioned cell phones and all give a guarantee of around 1 year, in case of failure. In these circumstances, the same company is responsible for covering the costs of dispatching the equipment to provide technical support.
Regarding the preferences of Chileans, the executive assures that “The best sellers are the iPhone. Those with the highest turnover are the iPhone 7 and 8 for adults in general “.
“In addition, there is a very interesting phenomenon, and that is that people buy a lot of Refurbished iPhones a bit older, like the iPhone 6S, for use by older adults and younger people, ”he adds.
And for those who are interested in buying this type of phone, he recommends “evaluating your budget, because these cell phones have excellent prices compared to the new ones; and also consider the use that you want to give it, since there are very advanced phones, including the latest models of the Apple and Samsung brands ”.
