House prices rose even faster in May than in previous months, when the increase was also exceptional. It reports that Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS).
Owner-occupied homes were on average 12.9 percent more expensive in May than one year previously. That is the largest increase since April 2001 and also considerably more than the previous top increase of 11.5% in April this year.
Only the prices of existing owner-occupied homes have been considered, and therefore not new construction.
Fewer homes changed hands
Statistics Netherlands also reports on the basis of the Land Registry that considerably fewer homes have changed hands: a residential transaction was registered over 16,000 times. That was 12.1 percent less than a year earlier.
In the first three months of the year, this figure continued to rise sharply. This may have been because starters with effect from January 1 no transfer tax had to pay more.
House prices reached a low point in mid-2013 and then started to rise again. Prices have since risen by more than two-thirds.
