Carl Nassib of the Las Vegas Raiders became the first active NFL professional to come out as gay. The 28-year-old published a corresponding post on his Instagram channel late Monday evening.
“I just wanted to say briefly that I’m gay,” said Nassib. “I’ve been thinking about coming out for a while, and now is the right time for me to get rid of it. I have the best life a man could wish for, the best family, the best joy and the best job. “
And Nassib continues: “I am a very withdrawn person and I hope you know that I am not doing this for attention. I just believe that it is important to be visible and to show yourself. At the same time, I hope that videos how this and this whole coming-out process are superfluous. But until that happens, I’ll do my best to exemplify a culture of acceptance and compassion. “
Carl Nassib: Generous donation for aid organization
Nassib does not stop at words, however. In the same breath, he announced $ 100,000 for the initiative The Trevor Project to donate that specializes in crisis intervention and suicide prevention for members of the LGBTQ community under the age of 25.
Nassib has been in the NFL since 2016. The defensive end is from Pennsylvania and played for Penn State before being drafted. In the NFL, he was active for the Cleveland Browns and Tampa Bay Buccaneers before joining the Las Vegas Raiders. So far in his career he has had 20.5 sacks and 143 tackles.
