Merdeka.com – Professor of the Faculty of Pharmacy, Universitas Gajah Mada (UGM), Prof. Zullies Ikawati, said that the side effects of using the Sinopharm vaccine generally do not require treatment and get better faster.
“Because it has the same platform as the Sinovac vaccine, the side effect profile is also similar. The frequency of side effects is 0.01 percent or categorized as very rare,” he said in a written statement on the website. Jakarta, reported by Antara, Monday (21/6).
Zullies said the side effects encountered in clinical trials were mild local side effects, such as pain or redness at the injection site, and systemic side effects such as headache, muscle aches, fatigue, diarrhea and coughing. These side effects, he said, improve immediately and generally do not require treatment.
Sinopharm vaccine is a vaccine made in China and has been tested in several countries. The Sinopharm vaccine has been included in the list of the World Health Organization (WHO) and received an Emergency Use Permit (EUA) in China, the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Egypt and Jordan, and in Indonesia.
This vaccine uses the same platform as the Sinovac vaccine, namely the inactivated virus. In clinical trials in the United Arab Emirates, the efficacy of the Sinopharm vaccine reached 78 percent, and this vaccine can be used in the population aged 18 years and over to the elderly.
“In general, from the evaluation results of clinical trials that have involved thousands of people in various countries, the benefits of vaccines far outweigh the risks of side effects,” he said.
Zullies added that Post-Immunization Adverse Events (AEFI) are generally mild to moderate and individual in nature, and the presence of AEFI also indicates that the vaccine is working.
However, if there are AEFIs that are felt to be severe, said Zullies, they should be reported immediately to the contact who has been given the vaccination officer so they can get immediate treatment.
In addition to being handled, AEFI will also be evaluated by the AEFI Committee regarding its causal relationship with vaccines so that it can become valuable data in the vaccination program. [eko]
