North Park presents its first book fair for independent authors and booksellers

San Diego bibliophiles will have the opportunity to support independent bookstores and local businesses recovering from the pandemic at an upcoming North Park book fair.

The North Park Book Fair, taking place on Saturday, July 17, will showcase books from independent bookstores throughout Southern California, including stores from Del Mar to North Park.

The book fair is the first of its kind in the neighborhood. The event will feature live music, open mic sessions, and poetry readings. There will also be food and craft vendors.

The event is organized by Verbatim Books and the North Park Main Street Business Association. More than 50 independent state bookstores will participate.

Angela Landsberg, executive director of North Park Main Street, said that in the past year neighborhood businesses had to circumvent reopening regulations, grant applications and renegotiate rental agreements with landlords.

“These guys have been through the toughest year,” Landsberg said. “They have passed the bitter drink and are open and happy to be open.”

Landsberg said the demand for a book fair from North Park residents has been around for a long time, so the association decided to partner with Verbatim to support independent bookstores and publishers rather than big business.

“It is a community of people with a hunger for literature,” he said. “This book fair is a way to get something out on the streets that will be a safe way for (residents) to support small independent bookstores and come together in an event-like setting.”

The book fair will be free and will take place from 10 am to 5 pm at 30th Street and North Park Way.
