Corné Hermans has Stargardt’s disease and has lost 80 percent of his sight. However, he has written a children’s book. Monday, June 21 at 2:00 PM, Alderman Yvonne van Delft will sign his book Pak het Bot! in Naturalis Leiden. In the presence of the group 8 children of primary school De Vink, she will also put on simulation glasses and sign 10 copies. The proceeds of the book and the sponsored walk of Corné’s classmates will go to the Eye Fund, the fund reports.

Alderman Yvonne van Delft looks for a moment through Corné’s eyes through simulation glasses that simulate Stargardt’s eye disease. The signing session is a follow-up to the book launch of Corné’s debut on April 28. Within a month, the 100 books were sold out! A lot of money has already been raised through the crowdfunding campaign. All proceeds go to research to stop Stargardt’s disease. Scientific research is promising for Corné! Professor Rob Collin is developing a molecular patch with which the cause, the genetic defect, can be taped and the eye disease has no chance. For 1,000 euros, one patch can be tested for one specific gene mutation. This has helped a patient such as Corné.
Sponsored walk by students group 8
Alderman van Delft comes to Naturalis to sign the books, draw attention to this terrible eye disease and thank the group 8 children for their enormous commitment to their classmate. The students ran a sponsored walk together. They have taken part in a sponsored run wearing simulation glasses, to experience what it is like to live with less visibility. During the signing session in Naturalis Leiden, they hand over the check with the proceeds.
More and more children with eye problems
1 million Dutch people have an eye problem. The Eye Fund is a super active organization with a great ambition: no one is blind or visually impaired anymore. One in five Dutch people will experience vision problems in their lifetime. Macular degeneration and cataracts are the most common eye problems in adults. Stargardt is a form of macular degeneration that starts at an early age. More and more children are confronted with eye problems due to the increasing myopia in the Netherlands.
