UEFA announced on Sunday that it had ordered an investigation into allegations of homophobic insults. These are insults directed against Cristiano Ronaldo during the match between Portugal and Hungary, and Mbappé and Karim Benzema during Hungary – France.
The investigations announced by the body this Sunday concern facts related to the matches played at the Puskás Arena in Budapest. Indeed, against Portugal, Cristiano Ronaldo would have been the target of homophobic insults. Also, during the following match, against France, Kylian Mbappé and Benzema would also have been the target of racist insults.
On the benches of the Puskás Arena was a Hungarian far-right group called the Carpathian Brigade. A group known for its history of racism, homophobia and Nazi gestures. He often attends home matches in Hungary and utters racist and anti-Semitic chants aimed at black, Gypsy and Jewish communities.
In accordance with Article 31 (4) of the UEFA Disciplinary Regulations, a UEFA ethics and disciplinary inspector has been appointed to conduct a disciplinary investigation into the incidents mentioned.
