Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia – Deaths due to corona (Copvid-19) in Brazil exceeded 500 thousand, Saturday (20/6/2021). The country of Samba recorded 500,800 deaths out of a total of 17,883,750 confirmed cases since the corona outbreak in the country 2020.
Deaths from corona in Brazil are now the worst after the United States (US). In the past week, there have been an average of 2,000 deaths per day in the country.
“500,000 lives lost due to pandemic,” tweeted Health Minister Marcelo Queiroga AFP.
Meanwhile, experts say the government is underestimating the pandemic. Vaccinations have been slow while President Jair Bolsonaro’s government has been reluctant to ask citizens to wear masks and practice social distancing.
Brazil has only vaccinated 11% of the population, of which 29% received a single dose. Brazil uses Pfizer, AstraZeneca and Sinovac vaccines.
Life in Brazilian cities appears normal with many restaurants and bars open with residents not wearing masks. In fact, critical situations occur in 19 of the 27 states with more than 80% of full ICUs, even reaching 90% in nine states.
“The third wave is coming, there is already a change in the case and death curve,” said Ethel Maciel, an epidemiologist from the University of Espirito Santo.
“The vaccine that could make a difference, slow and with no signs of restrictive action, is just the opposite.”
Meanwhile, Brazil agreed to host the 11th Copa America. Matches were played behind closed doors but Bolsonaro has come under fire for giving his blessing to host the tournament amid the pandemic as Argentina and Colombia withdrew.
