The Federal Audit Office has taken the Ministry of Health’s mask purchase practice to court. Minister Spahn cannot understand this. in the Report from Berlin he defends his “unconventional actions”.
Federal Minister of Health Jens Spahn defended his ministry’s approach to the corona pandemic against criticism from the Federal Audit Office. In the crisis, you had to act quickly, he emphasized in the Report from Berlin.
“I had a choice. By doing nothing, make sure that the Federal Audit Office had nothing to complain about. Or by doing, ensure that nurses have masks – even by doing unconventionally. And I decided on the latter,” Spahn continued.
“You don’t necessarily have to be in London”

He also contradicted the representation that mask purchases were not properly documented. Of course, this happened, even if only after the fact. The report of the Federal Audit Office is helpful to learn from it for the next pandemic, said the CDU politician. On the other hand, the standards of everyday administrative life would sometimes not fit the crisis of the century.
Spahn is already expecting further criticism. “When it comes to vaccines, in six months or a year it will also mean: too many orders.” But he’d rather buy 1000 too much than one too little – this applies to masks and vaccine doses.
The audit office had criticized a “massive over-procurement” of corona protective masks. This cost almost seven billion euros, according to a report available to NDR, WDR and “SZ”.
“We can loosen up now”
In Spahn’s view, the current pandemic phase is also about finding the right balance with a view to the delta variant. “We can loosen up now,” he said in the ARD-Broadcast. However, the mood should not lead to high spirits. “So: Confidence for the summer, but also caution, especially towards autumn and winter.”
Spahn against travel to the European Championship final
He advises against traveling to the final of the European Football Championship in London. “London is a virus variant area. Every returnee has to be in quarantine for two weeks.” This measure alone shows that if you don’t necessarily have to travel to Great Britain, you shouldn’t go there.
The European Championship final will take place in the British capital on July 11th. A game with around 60,000 people is currently planned in the stadium, although the delta variant of the corona virus is spreading rapidly. For this reason, Chancellor Helge Braun advises German football fans against a trip to the Thames.
