I met Maestro before the 1993 Song Festival in Dauderi, in the former summer house of Kārlis Ulmanis. I set the table for the Song Festival Organizing Committee. There was a separate room for dessert preparation. Maestro himself enters and points with his finger – what is a cake? And what about the cake? I say – this is a carrot cake.
Paul thought I was going to go and throw him, “Ha! And that would be a potato cake, and so it would be a sauerkraut cake? All that’s missing is herring ice cream!”
Raimonds Pauls was my first guest on my first Latvian Television show “Feast with Mārtiņš” in 1994. At the end of the show for dessert, I prepared him … herring ice cream.
“Herring ice cream ?!” asks the Maestro. I answer him, “What, what could be better than this ?!” And this saying stuck to me like a fly on fly paper, to this day …
