The 30-year-old, who rides for the French professional team FDJ, has struggled with heart rhythm disorders at irregular intervals throughout the spring.
When it flared up again in connection with Switzerland Around the beginning of June, she began to get scared.
– The day before this race I had 30 seizures during an hour where my heart rate went up very fast before it dropped down again. Then you get scared, says Borgli to TV 2.
Even though she was only out for a leisurely walk, the heart rate monitor showed up to 230 at most. It gave her a nasty feeling.
– I know that I push my body sick a lot at times. And it has happened before that athletes have had seizures, most recently with Christian Eriksen during the European Championships. It is clear that some thoughts go through your head then, says the Sandnes girl.
Reassuring answer
With the help of Alexander Kristoff’s stepfather, cardiologist Stein Ørn, she was admitted to Rikshospitalet for examinations earlier this week.
– I have known that I am relevant for the Olympics, so I wanted to check what caused these arrhythmias. Otherwise I would have traveled to Tokyo with a nasty feeling that this could be something dangerous.
At the hospital, an electrophysiological examination was performed, which is done to map the type of heart rhythm disorder the patient has.
– They went into the groin with an instrument and found out that I have a rhythm disorder that is not dangerous. It is very reassuring. And that was the answer I was hoping for. I may have relapses, but hopefully it has already healed itself. I was advised to cut down on caffeine and drink more cod liver oil. And I already feel that it has helped, says Borgli.
Must drop NM
She has been advised to take it easy for a few days. Borgli is therefore above NM, which is broadcast on TV 2 on Sunday at 09.
– It is sad not to be allowed to participate in the NM. It is a very special ride. In addition, I have felt in good shape. But I come by as a spectator. I will cycle a leisurely trip to Kristiansand from the family’s country house in Lillesand to take the ride with me, says Borgli, who now hopes to cycle the Giro d’Italia for FDJ before the Olympics.
