Academician, surgeon, traumatologist and orthopedist Viktors Kalnbērzs has passed away at the age of 92, his daughter Maija Kalnbērza informs on social networks.
Kalnbērz was born on July 2, 1928 in Moscow.
In 1951, Kalnbērzs graduated from the Riga Medical Institute with a degree in general medicine, in 1968 he became a habilitated doctor of medicine.
Kalnbērzs has been the chief traumatologist – orthopedist of the currently liquidated Ministry of Health of Latvia for more than 30 years. He has performed in England, Sweden, Portugal, Italy, Bulgaria, Venezuela, Germany, Czechoslovakia, Afghanistan. In 1987, he became an honorary member of the North American Association of Injury Surgeons.
Among the many operations carried out by Kalnberg, the gender reassignment operation, which was the first of its kind in the Soviet Union in 1970, received special publicity.
In 1990 he was elected a deputy of the Supreme Council as a member of the Latvian People’s Front. He was a deputy of the 6th Saeima, from 2005 to 2009 also a deputy of the Riga City Council.
