LIVE THUNDERSTORMS: thunderstorms reach eastern France

This weekend, a very important thunderstorm offensive affects almost the entire country: strong thunderstorms, hail and gusts of wind sometimes close to 100 km / h are expected. Follow LIVE throughout this weekend, HOUR BY HOUR, the evolution of this stormy degradation of high intensity.

A significant stormy degradation concerns 3/4 of the country this weekend, until Monday, hence our special release. This situation is linked to the fact that France is stuck in the heart of a conflict of air masses, between very hot air which rises from the Maghreb towards the center of Europe and fresh air from Atlantic origin. This situation is conducive to violent phenomena.

This Saturday

A 22h00, stormy activity remains marked from Hauts-de-France to the Ardennes. However, the improvement will be rapid with the evacuation of the disturbance to Belgium and Luxembourg after 11 p.m. On the other hand, thunderstorms cross Burgundy and the north of Rhône-Alpes and can be accompanied by hailstorms. The Saône valley is particularly targeted.

Finally, a few more isolated storm cells formed in the south of the Vosges but also between the Cotentin and the Sarthe as well as in the Pyrénées-Atlantiques.

A 21h15, thunderstorms quickly reach north-eastern France. The city of Reims has just suffered its second flood in 10 days due to the passage of a violent storm which left 30 mm of rain in 20 minutes.

Thunderstorms swept through Hauts-de-France but also Burgundy and reached the region of Dijon, which was preparing to undergo heavy rains and hailstorms. Further south, thunderstorms cross the Massif Central. Vichy and Clermont-Ferrand were affected. These storms are now progressing towards the departments of Loire, Haute-Loire and Cantal.

A 20h25, after having strongly affected Seine-et-Marne where accumulations of up to nearly 50 mm in 1 hour were recorded as in Changis (equivalent to 1 month of precipitation), the thunderstorms moved in particular towards the Marne where strong intensities are observed in the region of Reims. They will cross the department quickly enough to head in the next hour towards the Ardennes, the Meuse and the Meurthe et Moselle. Take shelter and avoid moving around because heavy rainfall is expected in less than 1 hour, with gusts sometimes over 100 km / h! This will be the case in particular in the region of Charleville-Mézières (08).

A 19h13, strong thunderstorms temporarily affected the capital. Some flooding was observed near the Jardin du Luxembourg where it fell 17 mm in 24 minutes, the equivalent of 10 days of rain. Violent thunderstorms also affected the municipalities of Saint-Maur-des-Fossés (94) and Combs-la-Ville (77) with 30 to 40 mm in 1 hour. In contrast, in Brive en Corrèze, a monthly wind record was broken under a strong storm. The gust reached 89 km / h. The previous record was dated June 25, 2020 with 82 km / h.

The stormy axis now extends from the east of Ile-de-France to the north of the Toulouse region. The thunderstorms are especially concentrated in the east of the capital and in the Yonne department. They are heading for Champagne and the Ardennes.

A 18h15, storms in Ile-de-France are currently concentrated between the north of Essonne and the east of the capital. The Yvelines are mostly spared and Seine-et-Marne remains for the moment on the sidelines. As previously foreseen, this degradation seems to evolve rapidly towards the northeast. Thunderstorms will cease fairly quickly over the capital within 30 minutes. Note the 20 to 25 mm observed in 1 hour, from 5 to 6 p.m., on Gometz-le-Chatel and Dourdan 91).

A 18h : the storms in Ile-de-France arrived a little faster than expected … but will thus move away more quickly. Currently the thunderstorms are concentrated in the south of Essonne with strong cells and locally intensities of 20 to 35 mm possible per hour. These storms are still heading, for the most intense, towards the capital and Seine-et-Marne. They should then regress and leave Paris between 6.30 p.m. and 7 p.m. then between 7 p.m. and 8 p.m. Seine-et-Marne. Although the thunderstorms will stop, it will still continue to rain.

A 17h20, the stormy axis now extends from the Hautes-Pyrénées to the south of Ile-de-France. During these last hours, it is the center-east of the country which has been the most affected by the storms and in particular the department of Maine-et-Loire where we have frequently recorded more than 20 mm of rain in 1 hour. and locally between 30 and 40 mm.

In Ile-de-France, strong thunderstorm cells approach the south of Yvelines and the south of Essonne.

Be careful if you are driving. It is the beginning of the critical period with these thunderstorms which quickly rise over the capital. If you are outdoors, take shelter!

A 16h40, the stormy axis always stretches from the west of the Pyrenees to Normandy and reaches the Paris region, the Center Val de Loire. Thunderstorm activity is particularly strong with falling hail and powerful gusts of wind.

At 16, storms redoubled in violence in the Pays de la Loire. Floods occur in Saumur.

A vortex phenomenon linked to descending gusts swept away some roofs in Indre-et-Loire at Saint-Nicolas-de-Bourgeuil.

At 3.30 p.m., the stormy axis continues to strengthen from the Pyrénées-Atlantiques to Lower Normandy. It is between Bergerac, Limoges, Tours, Le Mans and Alençon that the storms are the most violent. It fell locally in 1 hour the equivalent of 10 days of rain.

A 14h30, thunderstorms break out all along the stormy front from southern Aquitaine to Touraine. Locally, the hourly rainfall intensities are heavy with 22 mm recorded between 1 p.m. and 2 p.m. in Bressuire (79), 16 mm in Les Herbiers (85), 11 mm in Nantes (44) and 8 mm in Cholet (49), which corresponds to to a week to 10 days of precipitation.

A 13h45, thunderstorm activity is very concentrated north of Deux-Sèvres. Thunderstorms are numerous and move quite slowly. Locally, the intensities can reach 20 mm in 1 hour.

A 13h10, after having touched the Charente-Maritime during this last hour, the thunderstorms went up towards the department of Deux-Sèvres. Their intensity was partially reinforced, with locally hourly intensities of 5 to 15 mm on average as in Montroy (17), Rocheservière (85) and La Roche-sur-Yon (85).

Until 3 p.m., thunderstorms will continue to rise towards the Rennes basin and the Loir-et-Cher department. Towards the south-west, towards the Gers then the Pyrenees, another stormy line will form. Between 3 p.m. and 6 p.m., a very extensive stormy line can be observed between Normandy, Loiret and then descending towards Limousin and the Pyrenees. It will then shift north and east, intensifying. Thunderstorms are still expected to affect Ile-de-France between 7 p.m. and 9 p.m.

At 12 o’clock, rain and storm activity is spreading to the entire Atlantic coast. Between Lorient and Biarritz, the storm is rumbling and showers are sometimes mixed with hail from time to time. These rains, showers and thunderstorms spread inland rapidly.

At 11 o’clock, the entire Atlantic arc is affected by the arrival of the ocean disturbance with the increase in rains and thunderstorms. In the east, the heat is rapidly increasing and 30 ° C are already approaching in the Alsace plain and 28 ° C in the Saône valley in Lyonnais. The atmosphere is particularly heavy with a feeling of 35 over Strasbourg and Colmar.

At 10 o’clock, the thunderstorms which had come up from the Aquitaine basin last night in the Center-Val de Loire at the beginning of the morning have stopped. The sky has nevertheless charged over the Paris basin where a few drops are reported.

But already, a new stormy degradation is taking place on the Bay of Biscay and approaches the Aquitaine coast by 11 hours.

At 9 o’clock, thunderstorms have broken out in the southwest and are currently reaching the Center-Val de Loire. It was in Gironde that the thunderstorms were strongest last night.

The city of Bordeaux suffered the passage of a very violent storm with 40 mm of rain recorded between 1 and 3 am, which corresponds to 2 to 3 weeks of rain that fell in just 1 hour! Other violent storms affected locally Charente-Maritime and Loire-Atlantique.

In this mid-morning, a few thunderstorms burst in the Loiret before going up towards Seine-et-Marne and Eure-et-Loir. The weather will become fairly calm then until the end of the morning, before the triggering of new fairly organized thunderstorms from the south of Morbihan to the Vendée coast as well as on the Pyrenean massif.
