A total of 82 people linked to the Copa América have contracted COVID-19, an increase of 16 compared to the previous day, the Brazilian government reported on Friday.
The Ministry of Health reported in a statement that 6,926 tests have been applied. There are 37 people related to the 10 participating teams have been infected, between players and employees.
The other 45 cases correspond to workers who collaborate with the Copa América.
Cases have been registered in the four host cities of the tournament: Rio de Janeiro, Brasilia, Cuiabá and Goiania.
Brazil decided to host the tournament a couple of weeks before its inauguration, despite the fact that the country has the second highest number of deaths as a result of the coronavirus in the world, with almost 500 thousand. Colombia and Argentina, the original co-hosts, were ruled out.
Half of the teams that play the Copa América have reported cases of COVID-19: Venezuela, Bolivia, Colombia, Peru and Chile.
