Weeks of work of 60 hours or even more than 90 hours … The young medical interns started, since Friday, a strike movement denouncing their “extended weeks”. Future doctors who ask not to work more than 48 hours per week as stipulated in the labor code.
“In 2019, interns in France worked an average of 58.4 hours per week. And that has not improved” with the Covid-19 crisis, denounced Gaëtan Casanova, president of the National Intersyndicale des Interns (Isni). They are “in a bad state”, alerted this union representative.
21 days without break
Kim Dahan, an intern in an intensive care unit, testified on LCI of his exhausting working conditions, amplified by the Covid epidemic: “It was very hard. Often I worked two weekends in a row, which meant going 21 days without any breaks.” His work weeks could be up to more than 90 hours of work.
A study, carried out in 2017 at the initiative of Isni, indicated that 23.7% of interns had already had suicidal thoughts, 28% had suffered from depressive disorders and 66% from anxiety disorders. “It is also dangerous for the patient, recalled Gaëtan Casanova. When, at the end of the call, it is difficult to make a subject / verb / complement sentence, I would like someone to explain to me how we can take care of a patient in an optimal way “.

The Minister of Health Olivier Véran has committed to “improve their working conditions”. Two meetings at the Ministry of Health proved unsuccessful according to the inter-union. In February 2021 the Isni assured that “Each year in France, between ten and 20 medical interns end their lives. We, young doctors in the course of specialization, have three times more risk of dying by suicide than French women and men of the same age”.
This is not the first strike movement of medical interns, in December 2019 they had already launched a “indefinite strike”. This new national event will take place this Saturday in Paris. The procession must start at 1 p.m. from the Pitié-Salpêtrière hospital and then arrive at Les Invalides.
