Locals: Let’s finally see the countryman!

Thirty mayors in small towns are currently awaiting caretaker Prime Minister Stefan Yanev in his home village of Popovitsa. He is expected to arrive at any time to meet with them.

“We will offer him to initiate a financial audit of the municipalities in order to establish how the funds are spent and whether they are used appropriately for the needs of small settlements,” said the mayor of Kalofer Rumen Stoyanov.

According to him, most of the small settlements have been damaged in the financing by the municipalities. That is why the mayors of towns and villages have an idea with which they will acquaint the prime minister.

“We will propose that the municipal councils be closed by law and that the mayors of the small settlements enter the local governing bodies instead,” Stoyanov said. According to him, many of the councilors did not even know what they were voting for and because of that there was no efficient distribution of funds, from which the small town halls suffered.

Stoyanov stressed that this issue will be put to Stefan Yanev for consideration.

“We understand very well that it cannot be resolved quickly, but changes are needed,” the Kalofer mayor said.

Another question that will be asked is about the Bulgarian etiquette.

“When a product has a label that it is native, not only to be produced in our country, but also to be entirely from domestic products,” said Stoyanov.

The mayor of Zabardo Valentin Cherpokov is also in Popovitsa. He explained that he would insist on a personal meeting with Stefan Yanev because of the destroyed road to the Wonderful Bridges. About BGN 250,000 are needed for its restoration.

“If no urgent measures are taken, tourists may be injured. Although fences have been erected, people are removing them and crossing them,” Cherpokov said.

Minutes before Yanev arrives, people from Popovitsa gather in the village park. “Finally, let’s see our compatriot, who rose to the top in the country,” they commented. According to them, Stefan Yanev has not come to his native village since he was a child. He studied there until the first grade. He now accepted the invitation to join the council.
