Discovering Xela Arias | Radio Vigo

Next Monday, May 17, la poet, translator and writer Xela Arias (Sarria, 1962-Vigo, 2003) will be the honoree on the Día das Letras Galegas. A figure quite unknown by the Galicians and that we have made known in Today for Today Vigo and Baixo Miño with six people who knew her in her different facets.

At the age of 18, Xela left her studies to begin her working life at Ediciones Xerais between 1980 and 1990. The current director of Editorial Xerais, Fran alonso, has highlighted her importance in the professionalization of Galician book publishing and her great work as a translator. Yolanda Castaño is one of the poets who considers her a reference and has recently published the book “Xela wanted to be her. Biography of Xela Arias”, where he recounts his childhood, the stage in which he forged his personality.

When he was taking his first steps in literature he met Susana Wheat, with which he shared poetry recitals and promoted the Carel magazine. Not many know the musical side of Xela, who composed twelve songs for the rock band Desertores, which will give a tribute concert this Saturday in Mondariz.
