After the incident, images quickly circulated on the internet of people lighting a fire. After examining those images, the police managed to track down and arrest the two minor suspects.
The Rotterdam court found it proven that the 14-year-old suspect devised the plan to start the fire. He also had illegal fireworks in his possession. He is sentenced to 95 days in juvenile detention, of which 66 days on probation. The 16-year-old suspect gave a lighter to his co-defendant, was there when the fire was started and filmed it. The court sees this as co-perpetration. His sentence is slightly less with 90 days of juvenile detention, 61 days of which are suspended. Both punishments are equal to the demand of the public prosecutor.
According to the court, the theater in the family amusement park had an emotional value for many people that cannot be returned with reconstruction. She blames the duo heavily for that.
A crowdfunding campaign for the burned down theater raised more than 166,000 euros.
