In WhatsApp (only on the iPhone) and in Signal Messenger, parts of the image can be pixelated before sending.
This is how it works in Signal
For example, in Signal, compose a message and tap PlusIcon to select an image. Then tap on the top of the round PixelIcon that looks almost like a checkered soccer ball. Use your finger to paint over the areas you want to smudge. With the switch Blurring faces the app tries to automatically find faces and blur them. As soon as you are satisfied with the result, tap in the upper right corner checkmarkSymbol and can send the message. The recipient receives the edited image.
“Pixelation” is more of a blurring in Signal, but it works very well with this image of an example QR-bill

This is how it works in WhatsApp
Due to the lack of an iPhone, the author could not try this out herself. It is apparently the case that the function in the WhatsApp version for Android is still missing even after years. If you have an iPhone, it should work as follows in WhatsApp according to the descriptions: Open the chat in which you want to send a pixelated picture. Open the picture. In the top right, tap penIcon showing a color scale. If you slide your finger all the way down on the color scale, you will find that there too Pixel pattern. If you hold it and drag a little to the left, the pixels will be a little bigger. Equipped with this painting tool, you can now blur the desired areas on the image. Then tap on Send-Symbol.
